Little Alarms, Big Lessons

"I can't do this anymore." I decided.

One Wednesday morning, I packed my bags with great frustration.
School was getting busier by the day and assignments seemed to pile on me like building blocks on a weight.

Truth be told, my mind felt busy. I barely had any time (or made any time) for myself. I missed the silence of a calm summer morning to start off my day instead of being awoken by a noisy alarm. I am a morning person but these days, my mornings have become the worst part of my day. I simply rise up and make my way to the bathroom like a walking zombie.

One evening, after the prayers in my room, I decided, enough was enough. I switched off the Wi-Fi on my phone, packed my bags for the next day and lay in the bed.

"God," I said, staring at the plain ceiling. "All I want is to wake up early tomorrow and spend time with You."

I placed my Samsung aside after setting my alarm for 5:30 am.
Just in case, I thought. Though deep down, I felt that this alarm would be irrelevant.

It felt like two seconds when my eyes opened. The blazing sun shone through my window really brightly to signify a new day. I sat up and quickly and checked my phone for the time

"05:22" it said.

Wait. Did I just wake up without an alarm?

I got up with some unusual energy and got ready in a record-breaking 8 minutes! (considering that I became a walking zombie, this was a remarkable achievement!)

As I strolled outside to greet the beautiful morning when the entire campus was silent,  I could hear my own voice again. Sitting out at the football field, I decided to talk to God. I spoke what I wanted to see in the day and reaffirmed myself that my dream was real, my vision was still true and my voice is sill unique. Truth be told, that day went on to be my best day of the week.

However, one this small incident became a large lesson in my life:

I woke up without an alarm.

Most times, our lives can get so busy that we can get lost in the voices all around us. We have so much going on (most of them beyond our control) that it is easy to get frustrated and wonder, why am I here? What's the point of living?

Life is a gift and rising up everyday is a blessing. From my own example, I remembered a simple, but powerful statement: "If you think your alarm clock woke you up, try putting it beside a dead body and would realise that the grace of God woke you up."

The wise Teacher in Ecclesiastes said: "How wonderful to live in sunshine! Even if you live a long time, don't take a single day for granted. Remembering that there will also be dark days and most of what comes your way is smoke." (Ecclesiastes 11-7-8, MSG)

Life is unpredictable and uncontrollable, but your attitude towards it is not. Everyday is a beautiful gift from God and it signifies that you still have purpose. Even though you may not know what will come next, you have a God that knows. Let Him sort out the future, whilst you sort out the present.
Take every moment as a precious gift to be the best you can be and enjoy every moment.

My simple encouragement for you, Reader, is:

1) Count your blessings. It keeps you in touch with the reality that you are blessed even when you don't see it;

2) Spend time with God. Committing the first hour to God gives you fuel to keep going with joy and peace;

3) Take time to do things that make your soul smile. Whether it is listening to beautiful music or rising up early in the morning, like me, take time out of the busy world and replenish your soul.

Everyday you are alive is a precious gift. It's about time we treated it as one.

Have a blessed week ahead!
