The Day She Decided To Be Great

Dear Reader, let me tell you a story of a young lady I once knew.

Greatness. "What's greatness", a young lady asked herself.

She sat down one free afternoon and asked herself that question a countless number of times. Alone at home, she was bored as ever. So to keep herself occupied, she decided to surf the Internet. After watching countless funny videos and scrolling through her Facebook news feed, she decided, You know what, let me search on the people who made good landmarks in history. She went through the archives of great names such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, even Jesus of Nazareth. Inspired by their life changing biographies, she wondered, "What made these people great and memorable?"

Were they special? Were they marked out to be different and the rest of us not? Why is it that people were born in their timeline were not remembered until now?

She found an answer, well part of it,  by re-reading a blog post she read from this very blog when I started out back in 2016 called "The Greatness Diary."(28 May 2016). In it, she explored the ideas that I found on what true greatness is and found a deep revelation.

One common thing she noticed about the great, impact-ful people mentioned above is that they took the ordinary and made an extra-ordinary change in history. If you read through their lives, you realise most of them came from the humblest of beginnings but the impact they made has reached palaces and has inspired princes and paupers, even though they are no longer alive. They did not let the circumstances around them dictate their course of their destiny so they chose to do something out of the ordinary.

Wait, so, greatness is a choice?

From what it seems, it is.

Slumping down in frustration, she decided to observe the patterns of life again and realised a "glitch in the system". She grew up thinking and believing that life was a pre-set pattern that people had to follow. Born. Educated. Degree. Graduate. Job. Married. Children. Work. Get rich. Retire. Die. She felt deeply frustrated because when she looked around, she saw such a diverse universe waiting to be explored and this pattern was too "mundane" and didn't allow humans to do much with their life.

Was it wrong to want to be something different?
Sure, she thought, it was right get an education and follow the processes mentioned. But she wanted to make an impact. The world should know that God created a star in the world of darkness. Standing up with authority, she marched towards the mirror and did something that she never knew would impact her next steps forward in her life.

Taking in a deep breath, she said, "Young lady, you will be great."

After saying that, she didn't feel any different instantly, but the decision she made was a giant leap into a colourful destiny set out before her.

I am pretty sure you have realised that the lady I am talking about is my own self.

The step that I made was seemingly simple, but it was necessary to becoming the great person I will be. I realised the greatest step to becoming who you want to be is believing that you are different by changing your mindset.

Thoughts are a powerful part of our being. Every part of our actions originate from a single thought. Just as a computer has a program that dictates how it should function, your thoughts that originate from your mindset dictate how you will lead your life.

"Do not be conformed to the standards of this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." says Romans 12:2. Most of us want to soar like eagles but if you constantly believe that you are destined to live like a chicken, you will act like one, even if you have the capacity to soar like an eagle. True transformation comes from a simple switch of changing the way you think about your life.

Remember the people I mentioned earlier? The reason why they took the ordinary and made extra-ordinary changes and impact is because they realised that the extra ordinary potential is within them.

From the moment you were born, God placed greatness in your DNA (in Genesis 1:28, He spoke to first man (Adam, meaning "humanity", so basically God spoke to all humanity) and programmed us for dominion and fruitfulness. In you is a buried treasure chest of great potential. But it is your choice to pick up the shovel and dig it out, or sit on top of it and wail on why you are not special. You are destined for greatness.

To close off this 'As A Man Thinketh' series (it shall return soon, reloaded), I wrote this post to encourage you to use your life to discover all that you have been created to be and make up your mind: greatness or mediocrity.

Looking in the mirror, after I made that bold decision, I felt empowered for change. When I looked at myself, I saw a young lady with insecurities, flaws, fears but I also saw a woman of change, boldness, and most of all greatness.

What can bring her out? Maybe it is time to look at my original blueprint set for my life. I caught sight of my pink Bible on the desk and smiled.

To be continued....in the next series.
