Kings and Priests Part 1

Have you ever wanted to meet that one person who will dramatically shift your life to the next level?

I know I have.

Recently, I have been in a position where I have nothing major occupying my life. Finishing AS levels was great, but I found myself missing in action. I found myself binging on Facebook daily, watching my talented peers showcasing their talent (they know who they are!), making waves and getting connections....and there was me, watching them.
So, to make myself feel better, I decided to imagine that if one person in this special setting could meet me, then they could transform my status as a writer and see me for the change I could make... but where is he or she?

Clearly, I haven't been looking in the mirror often. Because I would have been seeing her everyday.

In this blog entitled, "Kings and Priests", I came to change the thought of waiting for change when change is actually  waiting in you. It is time we looked at seasons we are in and increase what we have rather than chase fantasies.

I recently got a job at a local tuck shop, and one of the advantages of it is that in empty periods, I could read or write to make use of the time. After I was enlightened about my issue, I decided to search for answers on how to deal with it. My first source of wisdom is the Bible and this time, I landed on the story of Daniel and his friends.

Daniel and his friends were captors of the Babylonians, Israel's bitter rivals and a powerful empire. The ruler of the land needed new servants to serve in royal service, so he sent a decree to "select only strong, healthy, good looking men" and "make sure they are well versed in every branch of knowledge and good judgement and are suited to serve in the royal palace."(Daniel 1:4)
Later on it says that Daniel and his friends were selected to enter royal service.
The kings marshals located them which sounds pretty similar to what I would have wanted if I was there (I wouldn't miss living in a palace!) but I realised one thing...

What if Daniel and his friends weren't like what the king described...
Would they have entered the royal service?

The same could be applied to us.
Often times, God can place us in particular places to train us for a position or to work in that position. The problem is that we do not see it that way. Using myself as an example, I thought my gap year was a season of languishing and envying prospering people and imagining for my big break, but clearly I needed a serious mindset change.

Someone challenged me by asking, "So if you met that writer that would promote your dream, skills, talent, would you be ready to promote it?"

Horrified, I imagined myself being asked at a press conference, "So, since you want to be a generation impacter through your writing, what is your plan and what steps have you made to making that happen?"
Embarrassed that I was so uninformed, using as an escape route, I pretend my mic is not working.

"Small beginnings are where the character of greatness is grown".

What will you do?
I believe in practicality. So I would offer these two steps:

1) Dare to know about you and sharpen your skills. You cannot sow seeds of excellence when you are not operating in excellence. You can't expect an orchard without sowing seeds. People need to see you operate in what you believe in before they can follow. Know about your strengths. Dare to invest in yourself. Read a new book to boost your self skills. Dare to be informed. A new skill or enhance your own skill and look at how it can benefit yourself and society positively.

2) Be prepared and expect the unexpected. It would probably be too late if Daniel tried to study the whole encyclopaedia to fit the king's criteria. Most of us are waiting for the big breakthrough but would you be ready if the President of your country walked in your room or office, and wanted to hear about what you want to change in your life?

It is in these self building exercises that you prepare for your next level and God, in His timing, will bring the correct people in your path, seeing that your character is ready for your elevation.

And of course, it prepares you to become a king as well....

But that is another story. Tune in for Part two to find out more!

  1. Good analogy of the story of the biblical Daniel and the need to build our skills set and be in a state of preparedness for greater service. May your literary gift and application of God's word bring healing and hope to a hurting world and as a reward bring you before great men.
