The Peace Formula
"Peace is a result of retraining your mind to process life as it is rather than as you think it should be."- Wayne W. Dyer
As I sat to think about what to write next in this series, I thought of different mindsets that I wanted to adopt, and get rid of. I had a huge list, but I felt moved to write on mindsets that matter, or seem to matter, the most to me at the moment. After some deep thought, I decided to write on peace, the positive mindset I believe we should all have and in this article, I will go further on what it means to have a peaceful mindset.
Peace has always been something we desire in our lives and we search for it in the strangest ways. We live in a world where there is constant affliction and peace seems like a treasure one should have because it keeps them from "drowning in life's storms".
I had once read a quote that said, "a boat sinks in a storm because the water gets inside. Don't sink in life's storms by letting them get into your mind." So the key is guard your mind from absorbing the pressure from life and you will stay...at peace.
How do we do this? It does not sound easy, but then it dawned on me... I found a particular Scripture, which focused on anxiety, but hidden within its text, there was what I call a "Peace Formula", a key to having a mindset of peace and lucky for you, I decided to share it with you in this article.
In Philippians 4:7-9, Paul is writing to a church on the attitude situations and troubles in life. In it, he had listed four instructions to have a peaceful mindset.
Paul first encourages us to "not be anxious about anything but through prayer and supplication, make your request known to God." From this simple verse, we get two instructions:
1) Give thanks and count your blessings. It is so easy to be caught up in what we don't have, but remember that you may not have what you want, but you have what you need. When you look back at the faithfulness of God in your life, you feel at peace because you realise that if He has brought you this far, He can take your further.
2) Let God in on your mind and remember His promises. Prayer is communication with God and supplication is humbly requesting for His help through His word. It is not enough to present God with a problem and leave it there even though He has solutions in His word. I read a powerful quote that said, "Like a padlock has a key, God doesn't give problems without solutions". Remembering His promises is a resting assurance that in the midst of an issue, there is an unshakable, undeniable promise that things will be alright.
When you do these things, we are told that we will "experience the peace that surpasses all understanding" (Philippians 4:7).
Bingo! We have peace. But as I read further, I realised something. Paul had more instructions and it seems that this peace we can acquire can get deeper..
3) Fix your thoughts on the good. "Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable..excellent and worthy of praise." Going further in our passage, we are instructed to think or focus on good thoughts. A revelation dawned on me that this could be good things that have happened in your life, but what Paul really meant is focus on God and His Word. Meditate on His word and you will see His goodness in different levels and realise that what Philippians 4:8 is talking about is actually God Himself and His truth.
4) ACT out the Word and do the "Jesus Walk". "Keep putting into practice into practice all you learned and received from me - everything you heard from me and saw me doing.." (verse 9). Now that you are dwelling on His word, it is not enough just to feel the goodness, but to act it out. I believe Paul meant act out what you have read and heard God instruct, which is shown in Jesus' life.
After all this we are told that the "peace of God shall be with you."
The revelation I got from this is that there are the two levels of peace you can acquire:
1)The " Experience Peace" Level: Experience is a feeling, and I consider it temporary. It is a comfort for the moment. Doing the first two instructions guarantees this but
2) The "Becoming that Peace" Level: Meaning in season, in trouble, in calm situations, you can constantly have the presence of peace, which revolve around instruction 3 and 4.
With this revelation, I present to you, the Peace Formula. As you go through life, you must realise that the keys to your mind are in your mind. Your choice is what you open your mind to.
